LOUIS VUITTON WORLD SERIES EVENT IN NICE LAUNCHES TOP PROFESSIONAL SAILING CIRCUIT

November Event in Nice will Count for 2010 Series Trophy

 

The Mayor of Nice, the World Sailing Team Association (WSTA) and Louis Vuitton are pleased to announce that the first Louis Vuitton World Series event will be held in Nice, France on the 7- 22 November 2009.

 

The WSTA and Louis Vuitton believe Nice is the ideal venue to launch the Series. Christian Estrosi the Mayor of Nice and President of Nice Côte d"Azur explains: "We are very proud to associate Nice with such prestigious names in the sailing world as Newport and Auckland whilst joining forces with Louis Vuitton to set up such a renowned sailing partnership. With the "Baie des Anges", we offer an exceptional spot to an exceptional race".

 

The Louis Vuitton World Series is an outgrowth of the successful and highly-competitive Louis Vuitton Pacific Series that took place in Auckland in February earlier this year. The launch of the LVWS is positive news for top-tier professional sailors as it guarantees a global world series aboard high-tech Version 5 ACC monohull racing boats. The series will feature a 10-team field competing in shared ACC yachts in a round robin, one-on-one match racing format where the two finalists go head-to-head to determine the winner. Points will be accumulated throughout the series to determine the ranking of the season.|

 

The second Louis Vuitton World Series event is scheduled for March 2010 in Auckland, New Zealand, followed by a Series in La Maddalena (Italy) in May 2010.

 

Organizers are also evaluating interest from other international cities to complete the racing calendar for 2010 and 2011. Bruno Troublé, creator of the Louis Vuitton Cup and LVWS spokesperson comments: "We have received serious interest from cities like Athens, Greece; Valencia, Spain; Newport, RI, USA; Cape Town, South Africa; Hong Kong, and Abu Dhabi to host future events. " The WSTA and Louis Vuitton will announce more events (2010/2011) during the Nice regatta this year."

 

The Series, confirmed September 2, is attracting world-class professional teams as well international waterfront cities for hosting future events.

 

Teams confirmed for the first event in Nice include: BMW ORACLE Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), Italia by Joe Fly (ITA), K-Challenge (FRA), Mascalzone Latino (ITA), Swedish Challenge Artemis (SWE), Synergy Russian Sailing Team (RUS) and Team French Spirit (FRA) .

 

Pietro Beccari, Executive Vice President of Louis Vuitton, in charge of Marketing and Communication, notes: "We only announced the Series last week and already another four teams have expressed interest for the remaining two berths for Nice. We will soon confirm the remaining teams for the LVWS – Nice."

K-Challenge, which has helped in establishing Nice as the Host City for the November event, will serve as Host Team in Nice. Stephane Kandler, K-Challenge's CEO: "The Louis Vuitton World Series is the result of hard teamwork between the WSTA teams and Louis Vuitton. We are very proud at K-Challenge to have played a key role in setting up the first event in France with the City of Nice where we will be the Host Team. We look forward making it a real success. This circuit is a new era for our sport."

All the LVWS events will be sanctioned by ISAF, the international sailing governing body and will take place over the next two years alongside the America's Cup, but will not compete with the pinnacle of sailing. The format is cost-effective – teams don't have to build boats – accessible, and turnkey for the participants.

Yves Carcelle, Louis Vuitton's Chairman and CEO, is delighted with this new chapter, which complements but is separate from their 25 year association with the Cup: "In the wake of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, which brought a breath of fresh air to the sailing world, this Series will allow, once again, the teams to come together in a competitive but friendly atmosphere."

Grant Dalton, CEO of ETNZ and a WSTA founding team explains: "The Louis Vuitton Pacific Series was a great success. It seemed logical to try and build on this and that is what we have done. It is a win-win situation for Louis Vuitton, the teams and the host cities."

 

Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing, a WSTA founding team, explains: "Sailing teams at the top of the sport require sponsorship. Sponsors require an annual global calendar of compelling events. And the sailors seek a highly-competitive series where they can face their toughest opponents on a fair playing field. We see this Series as addressing all of those elements and are excited by the potential."

Une nouvelle équipe voit le jour en Europe

 

Une nouvelle ère s'est ouverte pour la voile professionnelle de haut niveau avec le lancement des Louis Vuitton World Series.

C'est aussi un nouveau jour pour K-Challenge, une équipe qui n'a jamais cessé de travailler depuis qu'elle a été challenger dans la 32e America's Cup, notamment avec une participation aux Louis Vuitton Pacific Series en février dernier.

Nous sommes fiers d'annoncer que l'équipe va joindre ses forces avec le triple médaillé d'or Olympique et double vainqueur de l'America's Cup, Jochen Schümann. Cet Allemand de 54 ans dirigera désormais l'équipe en qualité de Directeur Sportif et Skipper.

Une nouvelle équipe de voile va à présent naître en Europe de l'association de trois acteurs clefs : Jochen Schümann, Stéphane Kandler et Sébastien Col.

Jochen Schümann est un des plus grands noms de la voile de compétition internationale et l'un des plus respectés. Son palmarès, son leadership et son charisme sont une des armes essentielles de cette nouvelle équipe, qui lui permettra de se hisser au niveau des meilleurs, et de faire partie des favoris dans toutes les compétitions auxquelles elle prendra part.

K-Challenge est l'Equipe Hote pour les Louis Vuitton World Series à Nice

Les Louis Vuitton World Series ont été confirmées le 2 septembre, elles impliquent des équipes professionnelles de premier plan venues du monde entier, dont K-Challenge.

Le Maire de Nice, la WSTA (World Sailing Team Association) et Louis Vuitton ont annoncé aujourd´hui la première étape des Louis Vuitton World Series qui se tiendra en France, à Nice du 7 au 22 novembre 2009.

En plus d'avoir été l'un des membres fondateurs de la World Sailing Team Association, K-Challenge est honoré d'endosser le rôle d'Equipe Hôte pour l'événement d'ouverture des Louis Vuitton World Series, puisque l'équipe a œuvré pour la sélection de Nice en France en tant que ville hôte pour l'événement de novembre.

Stephane Kandler, CEO de K-Challenge : « Les Louis Vuitton World Series sont le fruit d'un travail acharné entre les équipes qui constituent la WSTA et Louis Vuitton. Nous sommes particulièrement fiers d'avoir joué un rôle clef dans la mise en place du premier événement en France avec la Ville de Nice, où nous serons l'Equipe Hôte. »

Jochen Schümann est le marin Allemand le plus reconnu. Leader de Team Germany en 2008, il a remporté l'America's Cup deux fois avec Alinghi en 2003 et 2007 en tant qu'équipier et Directeur Sportif. Il a également 3 médailles d'or Olympiques à son palmarès et une médaille d'argent. (Or à Montreal en 76 en Finn, à Seoul en 88 et Atlanta en 96 en Soling, Argent à Sydney en 2000 en Soling).

Déclaration de la Société Nautique de Genève, Defender de la 33e America's Cup

Fred Meyer, vice-président de la SNG revient sur le dernier litige du Golden Gate Yacht Club.

"Il est triste de voir que BMW Oracle et le Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) persistent dans leur projet de gagner l'America's Cup par le biais des tribunaux plutôt que sur l'eau. C'est la sixième fois qu'ils mènent le Defender devant la cour. Peut-être que Larry Ellison continue d'avoir recours aux tribunaux pour ne pas attirer l'attention sur le fait que leur bateau ne correspond pas aux dimensions présentées dans leur propre Certificat de Défi.

 

"Les spéculations du Golden Gate Yacht Club sur la conduite du Match, avant même que l'Avis de Course et que les Instructions de Course ne soient rédigées et publiées, sont tout simplement prématurées et intéressées. Elles visent à dénigrer la réputation et la réussite du Defender de l'America's Cup, la Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), ainsi que l'America's Cup. BMW Oracle traîne une fois de plus l'America's Cup devant les tribunaux sur des accusations sans fondement.

 

"Les règles de l'America's Cup Match sont celles que les donateurs du Deed of Gift ont écrites il y a plus de 130 ans quand d'autres yacht clubs américains étaient Defender. Elles ne sont pas comme le Golden Gate Yacht Club ou BMW Oracle aimeraient les voir aujourd'hui en tant que Challenger, pour atteindre leur but.

 

Les faits sont très simples :

 

1. En l'absence d'accord mutuel entre le Defender et le Challenger, l'America's Cup est régie par défaut selon les termes du Deed of Gift.

 

2. Selon le Deed of Gift, et comme toutes les précédentes éditions de l'America's Cup, le yacht-club defender est l'organisateur du Match.

 

3. Le Deed of Gift mentionne que le bateau du challenger ne soit pas dépasser certaines dimensions. Le GGYC a présenté son Avis de Défi en spécifiant un bateau de 90x90 pieds. Ils doivent aujourd'hui honorer la décision qu'ils ont prise librement, et le bateau qu'ils présenteront pour la compétition doit correspondre à ces dimensions, comme le veut le Deed of Gift et comme l'a demandé le Juge Kornreich. La SNG ne souhaite pas voir le GGYC disqualifié. Ils disposent de suffisamment de temps pour modifier leur bateau et le rendre conforme à ces mesures.

 

4. Les règles du Match seront celles du Deed of Gift et celles des Règles de Course à la Voile ISAF écrites et promulguées par la Fédération Internationale de Voile et utilisées chaque jour par les yacht-clubs du monde entier, y compris le GGYC et la SNG.

 

5. Les règles du Match seront définies dans un Avis de Course qui sera publié le 6 novembre 2009 et dans les Instructions de Course qui seront publiées le 8 janvier 2010. Ces dates offrent un délai largement plus important qu'en 1988, lorsque la Coupe avait été disputée pour la dernière fois sous les termes stricts du Deed of Gift et que le Defender américain, dont le directeur des opérations était Tom Ehman, aujourd'hui porte-parole de BMW Oracle, avait fourni les mêmes documents au challenger de l'époque.

 

6. La SNG a déjà volontairement présenté au GGYC des détails précis des règles relatives à la construction et aux mesures des bateaux et elle continue de répondre aux questions du GGYC et de lui donner des informations pour lui permettre de préparer son bateau 'USA'.

 

7. Tous les arbitres et les membres du Jury International seront exclusivement sélectionnés par la Fédération Internationale de Voile (ISAF). Comme dans toutes les régates et épreuves sportives, ils seront, ainsi que les concurrents, soumis aux règles de la compétition.

 

8. La Cour Suprême de l'État de New York a vérifié l'accord entre la SNG et l'ISAF, qui fait suite aux précédents accords acceptés par le GGYC, et a déclaré que : "(l'accord) est en tout point cohérent avec le Deed ou les règles applicables. Il n'y a en outre rien d'inconvenant dans ce même accord".

Statement Tom Ehman, Golden Gate Yacht Club Spokesperson

We have asked the Supreme Court of the State of New York to take several steps to ensure that the 33^rd America’s Cup is run in accordance with the Deed of Gift.

Our reasons are clear: Recent actions by Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) to unfairly manipulate the rules continue their disturbing pattern of misconduct as Trustee of the oldest trophy in sports.

In today's motion, Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) seeks to hold SNG to its commitment to the Court not to issue rules that disqualify GGYC, as their measurement rules would do.

GGYC is also seeking to require SNG to issue rules for the America’s Cup match that comply with the Deed’s requirements. GGYC also seeks to make public the still-secret agreement SNG entered into with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

Specifically, with today’s motion GGYC has asked the Court to direct that:

 

• GGYC’s challenge vessel needs only to “not exceed” its challenge certificate dimensions, and that a precise match of dimensions is not required by the Deed.

 

• When measuring length on load water-line (LWL), rudders shall not be included. SNG is trying to subvert over a century of America’s Cup practice, as well as standard ISAF measurement procedures.

 

• LWL length shall be measured with the maximum weight that the competing vessels will carry while racing.

 

• The match shall be conducted in accordance with the ISAF rules (except for rules restricting vessel design, including racing rules 49-54 which the court has already held are in conflict with the Deed), and that any changes to those rules can only be made with the consent of GGYC and with the required approval of ISAF.

 

• With regard to the secret agreement SNG has with ISAF, that the court-ordered confidential treatment be removed so that it can be made public.

 

Today GGYC also filed an appeal of the court’s July 29, 2009 decision.

We remain excited about racing for the 33^rd America’s Cup in February 2010 and are moving full speed ahead with our preparations – even as we continue our fight for fair and competitive rules.

Statement from the Société Nautique de Genève, 33rd America's Cup Defender

Fred Meyer, Vice-Commodore of the SNG, comments on the Golden Gate Yacht Club's latest litigation

 "It's a shame that BMW Oracle and Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) persist with their campaign to win the America's Cup through litigation rather than on the water. This is the sixth time that they've taken the Defender to court. It is possible that Larry Ellison continues to revert to the courts to draw attention away from the fact that their boat does not meet the dimensions as per their Certificate of Challenge.

“Golden Gate Yacht Club's speculations over the conduct of the Match before the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions have even been written and published are simply premature and self-serving. They are designed to denigrate the reputation and achievements of the Swiss Defender, Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), as well as the America's Cup itself. BMW Oracle is once again dragging the America's Cup through the courts on baseless grounds.

“The rules of the America's Cup Match are as the donors of the Deed of Gift wrote over 130 years ago, when other American yacht clubs were the Defender. They are not as the Golden Gate Yacht Club or BMW Oracle would now, as a Challenger, like them to be, to suit their purposes.

The simple facts are:

1. In absence of mutual agreement between the Defender and the Challenger, the America's Cup is ruled by the default terms of the Deed of Gift.

2. In accordance with the Deed of Gift, and as with all past America's Cups, the defending yacht club is the organiser of the Match.

3. The Deed of Gift states that the challenging vessel should not exceed certain measurements. GGYC presented their Certificate of Challenge specifying a 90x90ft yacht. Today they must honour their own volunteered and freely submitted decision and their competing yacht must match those dimensions, as required by the Deed of Gift and ordered by Justice Kornreich. SNG does not wish to see GGYC disqualified; they have enough time to modify their boat so that it measures.

4. The rules of the Match will be the Deed of Gift, and the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing written and promulgated by the International Sailing Federation and used by yacht clubs all over the world, including GGYC and SNG.

5. The rules of the Match will be set out in a Notice of Race to be published on 6 November 2009 and in the Sailing Instructions to be published on 8 January 2010. These dates are considerably earlier than when an American Defender – whose Chief Operating Officer was Tom Ehman – provided the same documents to the then Challenger in 1988 when the Cup was last competed for under the strict terms of the Deed of Gift.

6. SNG has voluntarily provided GGYC with advance details of the rules and procedures affecting the construction and measurement of the competing yachts and continues to answer questions from and provide information to GGYC about these matters to allow them to prepare their yacht "USA".

7. All Umpires and members of the International Jury will be solely selected by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). Like all regattas and sporting competitions they, like the competitors, will be bound by the rules of the competition.

8. The Supreme Court of the State of New York has reviewed the agreement between SNG and ISAF, which follows past agreements approved by GGYC and found that: "[the agreement] is not inconsistent with anything in the Deed or the applicable rules. There is also nothing untoward about the agreement itself."

Some of the best professional sailing teams, grouped together under the name WSTA (World Sailing Team Association), and Louis Vuitton, a key player in the world of top-level sailing for more than 25 years, today announced the creation of an international regatta circuit.

The WSTA (World Sailing Team Association) groups together the participants in previous Louis Vuitton Cup regattas (K-Challenge (France), BMW Oracle Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand, Mascalzone Latino (Italy)) and welcomes newcomers such as Team Artemis (Sweden), Team Synergy (Russia), Joe Fly Italia (Italy) and Team French Spirit (France). Other teams will join the association in the coming weeks.

Entitled the Louis Vuitton World Series, these regattas are a first in the world of sailing and follow on from the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series organised in Auckland, New Zealand, last February. The global success of this exceptional competition persuaded all the partners in this adventure to create a dynamic and ambitious new race programme based on the same concept and format.

Ten teams will be invited to confront each other in successive duels over a fortnight on two pairs of identical boats chosen by lot. The racing boats were sailed in the 2007 LV Cup. This concept, which demonstrates the desire to return to the original spirit of "match racing", provides an exhilarating show and is easy for spectators to understand.

The WSTA and Louis Vuitton plan to organise several regattas a year. Many cities of which Nice, Hong Kong, Auckland, New York and several other European venues have shown their interest.

A press conference will be held in Paris on Tuesday, September 8th. More details about the first events to be organised in 2009 and 2010 will be disclosed during this conference.
