Bye bye les amis!

La flotte des 220 000 bateaux virtuels quittent aujourd'hui la ville de Stockholm pour l'étape de 400 milles vers Saint-Pétersbourg en Russie. Ces 400 milles seront le point culminant des 37.000 miles de course autour du monde et marquent la dernière étape de la Volvo Ocean Race Game 2008/09.

Alors que nous commençons la dernière étape de cette Volvo Ocean Race Game, je voudrai remercier tous les concurrents pour leur patience, leur coopération et compréhension durant la longue période des neuf mois de ce fabuleux voyage. Quelle formidable aventure depuis que nous sommes partis d'Alicante en Octobre 2008. Le jeu a attiré 220.000 joueurs virtuels, ensemble nous avons passé près de 42 millions d'heures à jouer cette partie autour du globe . La gestion en a été pour nous tous un challenge auquel on ne s'attendait pas vraiment, mais au final nous pouvons dire que nous avons vécu un moment génial et sommes fiers d'avoir fait partie de cette expérience unique! Ca a également été pour moi un plaisir et une aventure fantastique d'être un des concurrents de cette course. Nous pouvons nous targuer d'avoir fait partie de la toute première Volvo Ocean Race virtuelle et on peut s'attendre à ce que nous soyons encore plus nombreux la prochaine fois.

Alors que les 400 milles jusqu'à St Pétersbourg ne devaient être qu'une formalité, les prévisions météorologiques actuelles donnent à penser que les conditions vont être extrêmement difficiles. Les derniers milles se feront au ralenti avec un vent faible voir inexistant au plus nous approcherons du but. De plus, il semblerait que nous fassions tout au près et le nombre de virement de bord va être impressionnant.

La flotte va traverser la mer Baltique cap à l'est avant de s'engouffrer dans le golfe de Finlande pour rallier Saint-Pétersbourg. Les prévisions météos sont bonnes en ce début d'étape avec un vent de nord-est, de 12- 15 nœuds pendant les premières heures de navigations avant de s'orienter carrément à l'est Jeudi soir. Cette étape va nous voir louvoyer dans l'étroit goulet du golfe de Finlande et la décision de naviguer au sud ou au nord du golfe ne va pas être simple à prendre. A l'heure actuelle, cette étape devrait prendre environ 48 heures, avec une ETA à Saint-Pétersbourg samedi après-midi .

Nos félicitations doivent aller à Powerof7 grand vainqueur de cette première éditions de la Volvo Ocean Race Virtuelle mais également aux 220 000 skippers pour leur effort au cours de ces neufs derniers mois. Nous avons apprécié votre esprit de compétition et votre détermination à exceller. Et enfin pour terminer, nous souhaitons à tous les skippers le meilleur pour la poursuite de vos projets respectifs. Nous sommes convaincus que nos chemins se croiseront lors d'un autre événement nautique très bientôt.

Bye bye my friends - Stockholm to St Petersburg

The fleet set sail from the city of Stockholm for the 400 mile leg to St Petersburg in Russia today. This 400 miles will be the culmination of 37,000 miles of ocean racing and it will mark the final leg of the Volvo Ocean Race Game 2008/09.

 

As we are embarking onto the last leg of this Volvo Ocean Race Game, I’d like to thank all competitors for their patience, cooperation, and understanding during the nine months of this amazing journey. We know it was as difficult for you as it was for us. It's been an incredible journey so far. Since we started in Alicante back in October 2008, the game has attracted 220.000 virtual Volvo open 70's. Together we've spent nearly 42 million hours in the game. It has been life at the extreme for us all managing this game. In the end it's safe to say we all had a superb time and we're proud that we've all been part of this experience! It has been a pleasure and a fantastic adventure to compete in this Volvo Ocean Race Game. We can pride ourselves of having been part of the first ever Virtual Volvo Race and definitively aiming to be involved in this wonderful event next time.

 

Whilst the 400 miles should be a short leg, current forecasts suggest light and tricky conditions, which will make the final miles of the race a frustratingly slow time for the crews onboard. The forecast is upwind and for conditions to become increasingly lighter as we get to the finish.

Leg 10 will see the fleet sail across the Baltic Sea and then east down the Gulf of Finland to St Petersburg. The forecast shows good conditions for the start out of Stockholm with a north easterly 8 – 12 knots and this should last for the first couple of hundred miles, but it will be an predominantly upwind leg with conditions become increasingly lighter as we approach St. Petersburg. The leg will see us dealing with shifty conditions and some tactical options such as whether to sail south or north of the Gulf of Finland. It has the potential to be an interesting leg which may throw us some surprises along the way, at present the leg should take approximately 48 hours, with an eta into St. Petersburg on Saturday afternoon..

 

Our congratulations must go to race winner Powerof7; and equally importantly, the 220 000 skippers for their tremendous effort over the last year.  We have enjoyed your spirit and determination to excel.  We wish every skipper of every boat all best in the future and in the continuance of your project; we are sure our paths will cross at another sailing event soon.

De Galway à Marstrand!

Quelle belle régate que cette courte étape vers Marstrand !

Quittant l'Irlande sous spi samedi dernier dans une forte brise, il ne nous a pas fallu longtemps avant d’entrer dans la manche - La plupart des leaders sont allés côtoyer les littoraux français et pas seulement à cause du fromage et du bon vin qu’ils ont là-bas ! Le vent était généralement plus fort même si la distance à parcourir était supérieure.

Une formidable bataille a eu lieu tout au long de ces 5 jours de courses avec le leader actuel et probablement futur vainqueur de la VORG et bientôt conducteur d’une Volvo C30 toute neuve, Powerof7 a encore montré son immense talent de régatier virtuel en défendant toutes les attaques que ses adversaires lui ont lancé.

Il a tout de même été un peu surprenant de le voir faire un gros écart vers l'est après Calais lorsque le reste du peloton est resté centré il y a quelques jours. Une bien étrange décision tactique qui aurait pu lui coûter cher mais, une fois de plus, il nous a encore prouvé qu’il comprenait parfaitement comment le jeu doit être joué et mérite amplement une victoire au classement général.

La course n'est bien sur pas encore terminée, mais chapeau bas Powerof7!
Pour le reste d'entre nous, ça a été une fantastique partie de navigation au contact, avec de nombreuses décisions à prendre de jour comme de nuit (!)

Maintenant, nous allons être en mesure de profiter de Marstrand pour quelques jours avant d'avoir à faire face à l’étape la plus difficile de cette course autour du monde. De Marstrand à Stockholm, la navigation sera un véritable cauchemar et il ne faudra pas compter le nombre de fois ou on devra mettre le réveil pour réussir à passer sans encombre l'étroit chenal au Sud de la Suède. Peu importe d’où le vent proviendra, nous devrons ajuster nos trajectoires très souvent pour éviter de s'échouer.

Galway to Marstrand

What a great race this short leg to Marstrand has been.

Leaving Ireland last Saturday in a strong breeze under spinnaker, it did not take us long before we entered the narrow “Channel” - The majority of leaders went the French coastlines and not only because of the cheese and beautiful wine they have over there. The wind was generally stronger although the distance was greater.

A formidable battle took place for the lead with current race leader and probably VORG winner and future Volvo C30 driver Powerof7 showing his skills and masterfully fending off any attacks his opposition was throwing at him.

I have to say, it was somewhat surprising to see him making a move to the east after Calais when the remainder of the pack stayed centered a couple of nights ago. A strange tactical decision that could have cost him dearly however he, once again, proved to the rest of us that he understand perfectly how the game should be played and fully deserve an overall victory. It’s not over yet but hats off mate!

For the rest of us, well, it has been a fantastic short leg to sail with lots of decision to be made daily and nightly(!) throughout the journey. Now we will be able to enjoy Marstrand for a few days before having to cope with the most difficult leg of this Round the World Race.

From Marstrand to Stockholm, the navigation will be a nightmare and I am not looking forward to the number of alarms we’ll have to set in the middle of the night to sail through the narrow passage at the bottom of Sweden. No matter where the wind is coming from, we’ll have to adjust our course very often to avoid running aground.

The fleet of virtual sailors is fast approaching the final few turns of the Volvo Ocean Race track but there are a still plenty of opportunities and a few bumps in the road to St Petersburg beginning with Leg 8 to Marstrand –

After the transoceanic rides and immense spaces where the sailors were delighted to study the weather on a large scale, it is now the time to deal with coastal navigation and the risk of running aground and sailing into unpredictable winds ... The eighth leg towards Marstrand offers these difficulties from Saturday 6 June et 4pm.

But first, let tell you one thing about to Marstrand: In my opinion, it is one of the best places in the World to visit; and not only because of the legendary sheer beauty of the Swedish girls, but because this place is buzzing all day long (and night) with thousands of tourists having a great time on the rocks, watching yacht racing in this natural amphitheater. It is highly recommended to go there at least once.

There will be lot of navigational challenges on this leg to Sweden with the first one being the Celtic Sea crossing from Ireland to the waters south west of England. Completing this short open ocean passage we will then be playing the breezes around topographical features, using land breezes, sea breezes and fortunately for the players NO coastal current, nor shipping lane’s crossing or fog to deal with.

The weather is very unstable at the moment and no one knows exactly what to expect making this leg a particularly demanding one. After the sharp turn left at the South West tip of England, the key decision entering the Channel will be to stay near England or sail across to the French coast.

One of the numerous uncertainties is the estimated time of arrival as this leg to Marstrand could take between four and six days. It is also hard to make any concrete judgments on the wind direction and weather forecast as the situation is unclear and the wind might come from anywhere at each weather updates. The wind can blow from the south, south-west, to the north-west or east. That variability increases further as you head into the North Sea.

One thing that is quite certain as one of the “real” navigator explained was the likelihood of close racing. We could end up with a mass arrival and any minor mistakes will be extremely costly in term of places in a leg that will not be won until the final centimeters are sailed.

We can expect thousands of players to be glued onto their computer screen for the major part of this leg to Marstrand.

La flotte des marins virtuels approche rapidement des derniers milles de la Volvo Ocean Race mais il y a encore beaucoup d’opportunités et certainement de grandes difficultés d’ici Saint-Pétersbourg, en commençant par la huitième étape qui relie Galway à Marstrand.

Après les chevauchées transocéaniques et les grands espaces où les marins se sont régalés à étudier la météo à grande échelle, place désormais au parcours côtiers à défier l’échouage, aux vents imprévisibles… La huitième étape vers Marstrand propose ces difficultés à partir de 16h ce samedi 6 Juin.

Laissez-moi vous dire une chose au sujet de Marstrand: c’est un endroit génial. Et pas seulement en raison de la beauté légendaire des suédoises, mais aussi par le charme de cette petite île est remplie toute la journée de milliers de touristes qui lézardent sur les rochers en regardant les courses de bateaux dans cet amphithéâtre naturel. Il est recommandé d'y aller au moins une fois dans sa vie, l’exotisme est total !

Il va y avoir de nombreuses difficultés lors de cette étape vers la Suède. La première étant la traversée de la mer Celtique entre l'Irlande et la pointe sud-ouest de l'Angleterre. Cette courte traversée océanique sera alors suivie par une navigation côtière où la topographie locale influera énormément sur la brise thermique. Heureusement pour nous, skippers virtuels assis confortablement dans notre fauteuil avec une « cup of tea » à la main, nous n’aurons pas de courants côtiers ou d’épaisses nappes de brouillards à négocier, ni de « rails » et ses centaines de cargos à traverser.

La météo est très instable en ce moment et personne ne sait exactement à quoi s'attendre pour cette étape particulièrement exigeante. Après le virage à gauche à la pointe sud-ouest de l'Angleterre signifiant l’entrée dans la Manche, la décision de rester près de l'Angleterre ou de traverser « le channel » pour aller longer les côtes françaises sera sans doute un des moments clefs de cette étape.

Une des nombreuses incertitudes est la durée de cette course jusqu’à Marstrand qui pourrait prendre entre quatre et six jours. Il est également extrêmement difficile de prévoir avec précision dans quelle direction le vent va souffler. Les prévisions météorologiques ne sont pas claires et le vent pourrait venir de n'importe où à chaque mise à jour de la météo. Sud, Sud-Ouest, Nord-Ouest ou Est, ces imprécisions risquent même d’augmenter à mesure que nous approcherons de la mer du Nord en cette période de l’année ou le soleil ne se couche pratiquement jamais.

Une des explications d’un des "vrais" navigateur est qu’on pourrait se retrouver avec une arrivée « massive » et que chaque petites erreurs seront très coûteuses en terme de place dans une étape qui ne sera gagnée que dans les derniers centimètres de course.

On peut s’attendre à ce que des dizaines de milliers de joueurs restent scotchés à leur écran d'ordinateur pour la majeure partie de cette étape vers Marstrand. En tous cas, bonne navigation et rendez-vous là-bas d’ici quelques jours.
